Shorkie Breed Background and History
The exact origin of many mixed breeds can be dated back centuries, and it turns out that many of today’s purebreds resulted from accidental breeding and mixed breeds that became so beloved that over time, they were intentionally bred into a recognized purebred. That’s right, many of today’s purebreds started out as nothing more than a “Heinz 57” – i.e., a wide variety of many breeds. Many accidental breedings resulted in dogs that had temperaments and characteristics that people loved, which led responsible breeders to carefully and intentionally repeat certain breedings until eventually they had reliably and predictably bred the temperaments and characteristics they desired into the remarkable, recognized purebreds we know and love today.
Thus, out of my love for the temperaments and characteristics possessed by both the Shih Tzu and the Yorkie, I decided many years ago 23 yrs now, to intentionally breed a Shih Tzu mom with a Yorkie dad. The result was the most incredible, fun-loving little puppies my family and I had ever experienced. I was hooked and so was everyone that adopted one! I had people waiting for puppies years in advance. It was clear from the very beginning that if I focused and set goals for developing this breed, the world would fall in love with it as we all had. So, we decided on a breed name – we called them Shorkies – and our wonderful journey began.
Coming from a place of breeding only purebred Shih Tzus, I knew the road ahead would be long. Many purebred breeders were very offended that I was practicing this kind of breeding and referred to what I was doing as “mutt” breeding. I was not put off. I have stayed focused and committed to my journey for over 23 plus years now, pushing forward in my belief that I had come across the perfect companion breed. That being said, I would be remiss not to acknowledge that were it not for the incredible Shih Tzu and Yorkie breeds – and the incredible breeders who supported me in my vision for the Shorkie – none of this would have been possible. I have not wavered in upholding my breeding practices to develop this breed, and eventually I began to gain the confidence of puppy parents and other breeders alike. Today it is apparent that the Shorkie breed is gaining worldwide attention. I could not be prouder that they are finally stirring up quite a buzz and getting the attention they so deserve.
IN 2006 I Stefanie Bailey founded the Shorkie Club of America so other breeder could share in my vision of the ethical development of the Shorkie breed.
There are no Official Shorkie found anywhere else in the world other than at the Shorkie Club Of Amercia.
Questions About Shorkie Puppies
One of the
number one
questions we get
about Shorkie
puppies is are
they Non
shedding and
Hypoallergenic.
The answer is
yes. Both the Yorkie and Shih
Tzu are and with
the combination
we are able to
keep them as
such. So Shorkie
puppies are
hypoallergenic
and non shedding
which is great
for people with
allergies.
Next we are
asked about if The Shorkie has a
weight range of
4 to 12 lbs.
The Shorkie Club
Of America Set
the only
standard for the
Shorke Breed
Which is quite a
wide range.
It depends on
the genetics
behind each
breeding of the
parents being
bred and the
HONESTY of the
breeder you are
dealing with.
There is no such
thing as an
IMPERIAL SHORKIE
and no such
thing as a TEACUP SHORKIE OR
TEACUP SHORKIE
PUPPIES
It is simply a
phrase used to
scam people.
It is our
goal in the Shorkie Club Of
America to match
the right
Shorkie puppies
with the right
families. That
is why the
interview
process to adopt
from a Shorkie
Club Of America
breeder is so
thorough. We
take in to
consideration
the family life
style ,age of
children if
there are any
and suggest the
best Shorkie
puppy that will
fit in our
opinion. The
average weight
of our Shorkies are
in the 7 10 10 lbs
range full
grown. But
again that may
vary due to
genetics behind
each breeding.
No breeder can
guarantee you
size. That is
why it is so
important to
deal with a
SEASONED and
Truthful shorkie
breeder. This
is the very best
way to find the
puppy that will
be the perfect
match for your
family.
As in all breeds
including the shorkie is
prone to health
risks that is
NON eliminated
due to the fact
that it is a
mixed breed.
Genetic testing
on the adults
bred is the only
way to be
responsible. Cross bred dogs
are at even
higher risk for
health issues
because the gene
pool is so vast
compared to the
breeders who
have been
developing a
breed for
centuries by
using genetic
testing to
remove the
genetic issues
that plagues
that breed.
This is to do
the very most
for the adults
we breed, the
puppies we
produce and the
puppy parents we
service. Any
breeder should
make you fully
aware of the
health risks
shorkies are at
and explain them
to you in detail
.
The hybrid
Vigor theory
does not exist.
One of the
strongest
characteristics
of a Shorkie is
its personality.
Shorkies are a
friendly,
non-aggressive
dog that is a
good companion
for children and
other breeds of
dogs. Shorkies
are known for
their love of
playing and
romping around
but are quick to
get a cuddle in
when it is time
to settle down
and watch a
movie with the
family. The
Shorkies love
their human
family!!!! They
cherish no more
than to be loved
by their family
members. Belly
rubs are a must
for the Shorkie
puppy. Shorkies
will sit
patiently,
remaining still
with their eyes
gazing intently
on your face
waiting for you
to call them
over to be
petted and
turned over for
that belly rub
we every time.
Shorkies are
not a one-person
dog but love
every member of
the family.
Shorkies are out
going happy and
friendly
towards all
people and never
meet a stranger.
This is one
reason that they
are becoming so
popular. They
make friends
wherever they
go. The Shorkie
has a lap dog
personality, in
your bed type of
personality,
cant go to the
bathroom by
yourself type of
personality.
Shorkies will be
your shadow
where ever you
go.
They are neither
high strung nor
demanding they
just love to be
with you. The
Shorkie is
content during
the day to lie
in a corner with
his legs
stretched out
behind him
having sweet
dreams until you
are ready to
play or go for a
walk or cuddle.
Shorkies Puppies
are Incredible
family dogs and
perfect with
children.
